Headaches, Migraines, TMJ & Concussion Care

Headaches, migraines, TMJ issues, and even lingering symptoms after a concussion can be frustrating, persistent, and often misunderstood. Many people find themselves cycling through temporary solutions such as medication, mouthguards, or trying to “just deal with it” without ever getting to the root of the problem.

At Foundations Family Chiropractic, we take a different approach.

We focus on how the nervous system, cranial system, and upper spine work together, because when these areas are dysfunctional, they can directly affect how your body processes tension, movement, and stress.

What We Commonly See

Patients come to us dealing with:

  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Tension headaches or pressure around the eyes and temples
  • Jaw pain, clicking, or popping (TMJ dysfunction)
  • Difficulty opening or closing the mouth
  • Clenching or grinding (especially at night)
  • Neck tension that seems connected to headaches
  • Symptoms following a concussion (headaches, dizziness, brain fog, sensitivity)
  • Ear symptoms like ringing, fullness, or vertigo

Often, these symptoms are connected, even if they don’t seem like it at first.

Why This Happens

The jaw (TMJ), skull, and upper neck are closely connected, both structurally and neurologically.

Stress from things like:

  • Birth or early developmental patterns
  • Previous injuries or concussions
  • Dental work or orthodontics
  • Postural habits (phones, computers, driving)
  • Chronic muscle tension or clenching

…can create subtle restrictions in the cranial bones and upper spine.

Over time, this can change how the nervous system processes input leading to increased tension, altered sensory processing, poor coordination of the jaw, and recurring headaches or migraines.

After a concussion, these patterns can become even more pronounced, as the brain and body are already dealing with altered input and increased sensitivity.

Our Approach

We don’t chase symptoms. We look for the underlying patterns driving them.

Your care begins with a detailed evaluation that looks at:

  • Cranial motion and symmetry
  • Jaw movement and tracking
  • Upper spinal alignment and function
  • Muscle tone and tension patterns
  • How your body is adapting and compensating
  • Motion Study" may be taken to help determine where specific areas of subluxation are

From there, we create a personalized care plan focused on restoring balance and improving how your nervous system is functioning.

What We Do

Your care may include:

Gentle Chiropractic Adjustments: Focused on the areas that are creating the most impact, often in the upper spine.

Cranial Adjusting (Craniopathy): A specialized, light-touch approach to improve motion and balance within the skull and jaw.

Soft Tissue & Muscle Work: To reduce tension patterns that are pulling on the jaw, neck, and surrounding structures.

Cold Laser Therapy: To support tissue healing and calm inflammation in irritated areas.

What This Means For You

When we improve how your body is processing and adapting to stress:

  • Tension patterns begin to decrease
  • Jaw movement becomes smoother and more comfortable
  • Headaches and migraines often become less frequent and less intense
  • Post-concussion symptoms can begin to settle as the system becomes more regulated
  • Your body doesn’t feel like it’s constantly “fighting” itself

We’re not forcing symptoms to disappear. We’re improving the input to your nervous system so your body can function the way it was designed to.

A Different Kind of Care

Our goal is not just short-term relief—but helping your body move out of a constant stress pattern and into a state of better balance and regulation. Care is always:

  • Gentle
  • Specific
  • Individualized

Whether you’ve been dealing with migraines for years, recovering from a concussion, or just starting to notice jaw discomfort, we’re here to help you understand what’s going on and what you can do about it.

Initial Assessment

The therapist and client start with an initial assessment session where they get to know each other. The therapist asks questions to understand the client's presenting concerns, personal history, current life circumstances, and goals for therapy. This helps in establishing a therapeutic alliance and creating a treatment plan tailored to the client's needs.

Establishing Goals

Based on the assessment, the therapist and client collaboratively set specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals for therapy. These goals serve as a roadmap for the therapeutic process and provide direction for the sessions.

Exploration and Insight

In subsequent sessions, the therapist creates a safe and supportive environment for the client to explore their thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and behaviors. Through reflective listening, empathy, and insightful questioning, the therapist helps the client gain a deeper understanding of themselves, their relationships, and their life experiences.

Skill Building

Therapy often involves teaching clients coping skills and strategies to deal with stress, anxiety, depression, anger, communication issues, or other mental health concerns. These skills may include relaxation techniques, assertiveness training, problem-solving skills, mindfulness practices, and boundary-setting exercises.

Building Self Confidence

Therapists help clients cultivate self-awareness, self-compassion, and self-acceptance. Through validation, positive reinforcement, and encouragement, clients learn to challenge negative self-perceptions, build self-esteem, and develop a greater sense of confidence and self-worth.

Monitoring Progress

Throughout the therapy process, the therapist and client regularly review progress towards the established goals. Adjustments to the treatment plan may be made based on the client's evolving needs and progress.
